Notes: -

1.      Reference population is an estimate of the number of residential listings in a phone book.  It’s not the same as the actual population, but should be capable of giving a comparison basis.

2.      The areas listed are those of the appropriate UK phone book.

3.      Any sample of 3 or less, I’ve generally ignored, unless the population is particularly small.

4.      Spaces in columns 5 and 6 just mean I’ve not done the sum.

5.      There’s obviously a threshold – I would suggest around 40/million where the figures will be unreliable or subject to too many influences.  Anything over 40 I would be prepared to consider significant.

6.      It may not be able to draw significant conclusions from a comparison of the very big numbers, because for example the Cumbria number is heavily focussed in a much smaller area, Cockermouth and Whitehaven.  Equally the NI names are almost all either Belfast (38) or South Down (22), with only 3 elsewhere in NI.

7.      The global comparison of all areas helps determine where further detailed analysis would be useful, but a better population estimate of local areas would be needed.

8.      Other names noted in passing.  There were quite a few SKILLIN that seemed ‘close’ to SKILLEN/SKILLING areas.  SKILL, SKILLETT, SKILLINGTON, SKILLER, SKILLERN, SKILTON, SKILLETER, SKILLICORN, SKILTON didn’t look relevant by eyeball.

9.      The 9 SKILLEN in the Isle of Man were next to 6 SKILLAN.  I think this could be relevant as SKILLAN didn’t appear much elsewhere.

10. Interestingly, SKILLEN and SKILLING don’t seem to give the same answer.
