Griffiths Primary Valuation

Survey of Skillen by Parish Townlands

An Act was passed in 1826 that permitted a uniform valuation of property in all Ireland in order to levy the county cess charges and the Grand Jury Rates. Sir Richard Griffith began the assessment of the whole country, county by county. The valuation records every land owner and householder in Ireland. The survey took place between 1848 and 1864. It lists almost every head of household for every county.

An amendments to the act in 1826 excluded houses under the annual value of 3 pounds and another amendment in 1831 excluded houses under the annual value of 5 pounds.

Where two persons with the same surname were assessed in the same townland or parish they would be differentiated by either their father’s first name or by the colour of their hair. For example, in Clonachulion Townland of Kilcoo Parish in 1863 there must have been two James Skillen. One was identified as James Skillen (Black).

The main difference between the Tithe Applotment Books and the Griffiths Valuation is that all householders were identified in Griffiths. In the tithe Applotment only leaseholders of agricultural land are identified.
